Sep. 14th, 2005 @ 12:13 pm California Gay Marriage Issue
I don't know where you stand on the gay marriage issue, but here's an easy thing to do if you are in favor. You don't have to be a California resident to show your support.

I just did this and it takes less than 1 minute of your time to complete.

California Gov. Schwarzenegger's office is accepting calls from anywhere regarding the marriage equality bill. It passed both houses of the

legislature, but needs the Governor's approval, and he's threatening a veto. Public opinion may make the difference.
It's all automated, so you don't have to talk to anyone.

Follow these directions:

1. Call the Governor: 916-445-2841 (This number is listed at www.governor.ca.gov)

2. Push: 2 (voice your opinion on legislation)

3. Push: 1 (gender-neutral marriage bill - Senate Bill 849)

4. And push: 1 to support marriage equality

Thanks

CLEAN | COMPLEX | DARK

You like things edgy, subtle, and smart. I guess that means you're
probably an intellectual, but don't take that to mean you're
pretentious. You realize 'dumb' can be witty--after all isn't that the
Simpsons' philosophy?--but rudeness for its own sake, 'gross-out' humor
and most other things found in a fraternity leave you totally flat.

I
guess you just have a more cerebral approach than most. You have the
perfect mindset for a joke writer or staff writer. Your sense of humor
takes the most effort to appreciate, but it's also the best, in my
opinion.

Also, you probably loved the Office. If you don't know what I'm

Mom's mayoral election didn't quite go the way we wanted it to. Still it was my family first entry into politics—aside from my failed Student Council President election in 9th grade.

I even bought Mom a Web domain as my contribution to the race, though I make no claims on the design.

I hope Mom doesn't take her loss too seriously. After talking with her the past couple nights, mayoral races for suburbs of Oklahoma City rival national elections in terms of nastiness. Long live politics.

The same day I get a "Have you seen this??!! It's a riot" for my aunt in Oklahoma City with a list of cutesy biblical jokes that I received about 5 years for the first time.

EDIT: Damn Inter web trends! Is anything new? I'm moving back to Oklahoma where two years ago is still cool.

Academy took back all my snowboarding gear—no questions asked! This liberal return policy for goods already marked down 70% has caused me to overcome my bias against a seemingly Red State-ish entity. No way Oshman's or Sun and Ski Sports would have taken that stuff back. Hurray for some Red State, inexpensive horse sense asa well.

I cancelled my snowboarding trip junket. Ranadelmaya was unhappy, but understanding about this. My bank account (or rather credit card accounts) are enjoying not going down to the tune of major bucks.

Today WhiteRiot and I sat down and wrote out my budget. It wasn't my first one, but it might be more sucessful. WhiteRiot asked, "You spend $100 on clothing A month. That's $1,200 a year!" True. Of course, I'm coming from a culture where Neiman-Marcus Last Call is seen as the place to buy a cheap, good suit as well. My father almost had a second heart attack when I told him that I was considering spending $500 on a suit. Man, it's hard to be a homo, but my $250 Calvin Klein suit from Foley's still looks pretty good.

Hopefully, I am starting a new area of financial responsibility, where I can enjoy myself, but also save a little money. That would be good. Extremes tend to just cause more extremes.

Current Music: Doves—Walk in the Fire
Today is my second day without a cigarette. The quit smoking goo is starting up in my lungs. This is the dirty side of quitting that no one ever bothers to tell you about.

Yesterday, I was sitting in my film class and during our Q&A session at the end of the talk , La Preguntada (the question lady) asked five questions (at once—so much for the two part question...). Something about her set me off. I really wanted to shout at her right there in the Studio 4D. Is this what my little friend nicotene does—keeps me from being a complete beast?

I will have to learn how to be more sociable at bars again. A cigarette gives you a great cloud to hide behind if you don't have much to say or your friend is hitting on somebody and doesn't have a cute friend for you to talk with. I will have to find other ways to kill those five minutes before class. I will have to find other ways to blow off steam after work.

Still, I know I will no longer have that chemically amped up feeling that I've been having since I started up smoking again in July.

Current Mood: curious
Current Music: Doves—Black and White Town
Since the advent of the Internet, I've noticed myself forever enslaved to checking my e-mail, checking news sites, checking anything. With cell phones in our pockets, I find myself and friends playing with our phones all the time. People aren't smoking any more, they're checking.

Checking is going to drive me insane. Really, it keeps me from getting little done at work. If I get stressed out or bored at work (pretty much my two work moods), I find myself chronically checking my e-mail and blog.

Yesterday, one of the engineers I work with walked into the breakroom at 3 pm. I was getting a cup of tea and she pulled out a crusty Lean Cuisine from the microwave. She'd gotten so engrossed in a project that she'd forgotten to get her lunch that she'd nuked at noon...

I'm too busy checking things to let things like that go by. I'd like a happy medium between me and that engineer. I can get out of a trance to check up on things, but I can also focus on one task without getting bogged down in little electronic blips.

Any advice for overcoming the IM, e-mail, web frenzy? Just shut the stuff off??

I'm still riding a wave of good vibes from SXSW. Every once in a while I need something that resets my clock and inspires me to do something else. I've started planning my escape from my current situation. I'm not exactly sure where it will lead, but excitement is drowning out my terror more than usual.

I got the Doves album last Saturday after their in-store performance at Waterloo Records. I have been listening to it like crazy. Thumbing through a Details the other day, I came across a review of the band. To paraphrase: "if Coldplay took better drugs, you'd have the Doves". Woo hoo. I haven't been obsessed with a band from Manchester in years. New Order, Stone Roses,... Doves?

Lately, I feel like some force is causing me to look in directions that I haven't considered before. However, a potential gig in the entertainment industry, an open space at an entertainment seminar sponsored by the Texas Exes, and meeting a cool guy from LA during SXSW have caused me to reevaluate several years of prejudice towards a city.

I'd go to Christmas parties or Thanksgiving dinners with my parents's friends and conversations would go like this:
Sunday School Member: "Your dad says your into making movies."
Rhinelander: "Yeah. I made a couple of short films."
Sunday School: "How neat. My son lives out in LA. He works for Spielberg as a 2nd Unit Assistant Director."
Rhinelander's jaw drops.
Rhinelander: "I always imagined myself as more of an indepent film, New York kind of guy."
Sunday School: "Well that's nice. Say, are you excited that UT is going to the Rose Bowl this year..."

Being a snob can hurt you. Also, after six weeks of the Film class I'm taking at UT this semester, I'm realizing that I'm not as much the indie film guy I thought I was. I've seen one too many indie films set in NYC. Pi was great. Requiem for a Dream was good. People are making lots of great stuff, but most art house/film festival stuff has become just another genre of cliches. Will there be another Latin American movie interweaving three disparate plot lines this year with incredible violence and beautiful cinematography? Will the Scandinavians come up with another movement urging people to break standard film conventions?

Do I really want to join the hoodie under a blazer minions in Williamsburg? LA is sunny, I can go surfing there, own a car, and maybe even live in a semi-decent part of town. I still can't believe I'm saying this. And I just don't care any more. I desire to work on movies people actually see and don't want to spend winters falling on my butt in the snow. I have big demands, but at least I know what I want.

After attending countless panels at SXSW this past weekend, I am feeling inspired again. I more like writing, planning, networking, and everything else involved in making movies than I have, well since I went to the Austin Film Festival back in October. The key is in doing something, however small, every day. It's so easy to get caught up in your own little personal dramas to forget what you're really passionate about.

I've learned so much over the past few days:

  1. You must wear lots of black to be a filmmaker.

  2. Plan your film schedule around networking events so that you can eat for free.

  3. Drunk locals are more entertaining than other filmmakers.

  4. Every second attendee of filmfestival panels seems to be a software or hardware engineer on haitus who just bought a $3,000 prosumer DV camera but hasn't used it.

  5. For Terrajen, doidare, and LeLe: If you want to meet lots of smart, mildly cute straight guys in black, you're in business. I didn't ask any if they liked c**k though.

  6. You should really buy a ratty brown or black blazer before attending a film festival.

More serious observations:

  1. Write like crazy.

  2. Always have something cooking.

  3. Do it, do it, do it.

  4. Documentaries are funnier these days than narrative films at film festivals.

My new cell phone provider and washing machine have gone into collusion together. First, my new cell phone provider shuts off my service because a bill lacked an apartment number and got returned. Then, today in a rush. I popped my phone into the washing machine. My mother had a point about always checking the pockets.

Oh, oh, oh, I thought. I am clever. I had my cell phone backed up on Bluetooth. However, iSync doesn't support my phone or my phone doesn't support iSync. However, I can use the $70 wireless Bluetooth feature.

I'm unsure if dropping the landline was a sound idea. Mental note. Always write new numbers down...
